Report: Samsung to debut three S10 phones & foldable device in 2019

With all the big smartphone reveals for the year done and dusted now that Huawei has unveiled the Mate 20 Pro, it’s time to turn our attention to next year.

One manufacturer generating a lot of buzz at the moment is Samsung, with a new report from Bloomberg highlighting some interesting devices that could be on the way from the South Korean company.

Starting with the Galaxy S devices, Bloomberg’s unnamed sources who are said to be close to the project say a trio of S10 branded devices will be unveiled next year. The time of the release in unknown but it will more than likely be at MWC early in 2019.

As for the phones, two of the models will serve as differently sized flagships, both sporting curved displays and fingerprint sensors embedded beneath the display. For now, there’s no mention if they’ll go the all-screen route like other phones have done this year and utilise a screen notch where the front-facing camera is housed.

The third model is said to be a “cheap” version that will feature a physical fingerprint sensor somewhere on the phone’s body, and will more than likely be Samsung’s Lite model for the S10.

Why Samsung would choose to do a trio of variants for its S10 is unclear, especially as their mobile head, DJ Koh, has noted that the company will begin to focus more heavily on the mid-range space.

As for the foldable device, which is reportedly being readied for a conceptual reveal at Samsung’s developer conference next month, it looks like the company is still mulling over whether the phone should fold vertically or horizontally.

Other rumoured aspects of the phone are that it will have a 7″ (diagonal) display when unfolded, with a smaller 4″ screen when the device is folded. It won’t go the embedded fingerprint sensor route though, with the technologically still tricky to figure out at this stage for such a form factor.

It’s been a few years since Samsung first teased the fact that it’s working on such a device, but if it could reveal it in 2019, it may very well be the most significant mobile announcement since the iPhone in 2007.

Either way, Samsung appears to be gearing up for a big 2019 indeed.
