Apple halts watchOS 5.1 update following bricked device reports

Apple debuted a handful of new devices in New York yesterday, but there appears to be an issue with one of the company’s other product lineups – the Apple Watch.

This specific issue revolves around software and their watchOS 5.1 update for the wearable.

Some users have reported that their device gets bricked once they install the watchOS 5.1 update, which is obviously less than ideal. The first notable reports came from 9to5Mac’s Guilherme Rambo, along with several of the website’s readers.

We have not heard about any complaints locally, but they may be because Apple has since pulled the 5.1 update for download as it investigates the problem.

This isn’t the first time that the Apple Watch has suffered from software issues, with a Daylight Savings bug affecting the Series 4 version of the smartwatch only a few weeks ago, before a patch fixed it.

As such, Apple Watch owners will have to wait for the company to come up with a similar fix, as fiddling with the software on an Apple Watch is not as simple as it is with an iPhone or iPad.

Usually it necessitates taking the device into an iStore and dealing with the service desk, but that too can prove an equally frustrating experience.

For now, Apple has advised Watch owners to not download the latest watchOS update.

As for those who are now sitting with bricked Apple Watches, no remedy has been provided.
