LG 65″ C8 OLED TV Review: Centre Piece

In the world of consumer technology, TVs are often an investment rather than an impulse purchase.

And especially so when it’s a large OLED TV that costs upwards of R40k, along with being a fixture in one’s living room for a number of years.

As such when picking one to take up a prime spot in your own house, you need to be sure it not only produces superb visuals, but also boats a few technological features that will increase the longevity and justify the asking price of the device.

A flagship model

Good then that we received one of LG’s new flagship OLED TVs for review.

The particular model in question is the 65″ C8 OLED TV.

In terms of the South Korean company’s new offerings, it sits just below the 77″ model as the best OLED TV you can but from LG at the moment.

So we know LG has high regard for the C8 OLED TV, but how did it go during our time with it?

After unboxing, some careful handling and a relatively quick setup, you get a sense of just how massive this TV is.

We had it set up in our living room, and on more than one occasion a visitor noted, “wow, that’s a big TV.”

Yes, the C8 is wide at 144.9 centimetres, but what immediately struck is about the TV is how tall it is at 88.1 centimetres. This height means you’ll likely look for an additional means of securing the TV to whatever cabinet or piece of furniture you have it perched on.

The C8 is not overly top-heavy in any way, but during the set up we could tell that any kind of knock and this TV could easily fall forward to disastrous effect.

Picture perfect

Moving onto the visuals, the OLED display on the C8 yields a 3 840 X 2 160 resolution. The quality of this screen only really shines through depending on the content you have running on it.

We were watching the weekend’s football in HD for example and it wasn’t really anything to write home about. That changed instantly though when we started watching Netflix original series and movies in 4K, with things looking beautifully vibrant and crisp.

This shows then that the C8 OLED TV craves 4K content in order to make the most of its specifications, and ultimately needs a consumer with a similar appetite.

As for other forms of media, we connected a PS4 console and had a few gaming sessions. On the whole the C8 is not an out-and-out TV designed for gaming content, but can certainly deliver the buttery smooth visuals required.

As such we’d advise using it for games best designed for a multiplayer experience, as it makes the most of the screen real estate available.

Along with great visuals the C8 OLED TV has all the necessary certifications to match, such as support for HDR and HDR 10 Pro, 4K upscaling, built-in Dolby Atmos and LG’s ThinQ AI functionality to set up a little network of connected smart devices, or control the C8 as a smart device on its own.

Well appointed

The last thing to look at for the C8 is how it serves as a media hub for the home. For this aspect we need to see how LG has kitted it out in terms of connections and ports. Yes, wireless is the ideal way to go here, but sometimes an HDMI port is just better served.

Speaking of which the C8 is not short in this department, with four in total. Added to this is two USB slots, a pair of RF in ports, an optical digital out option, and of course WiFi (802.11ac) and Bluetooth 4.2 connectivity on offer.

As such if you’re need to connect any other media to the C8 OLED TV, it has a port capable of assisting.

Final verdict

How much does the 65″ C8 OLED TV cost?

Well LG has recommended that this model retail for R49 999.

If you pay that much for a TV, or anything at all for that matter, you want to rest safe in the knowledge that it does what it says on the box.

The C8 does it and then some. We were especially impressed with the image quality while watching 4K content, and the setup and UI is easy to use. Add to that a good set of onboard speakers, as well as a host of Android app support thanks to its Smart TV status and the C8 does not leave you wanting.

The only thing to consider is size, as 65″ is large indeed. Luckily LG also has a smaller 55″ model that’s similarly decked out in terms of specs.

Buy the 65″ C8 OLED TV from LG and it will be a wise electronics investment.
