Fitbit Charge 3 now available to purchase in South Africa

In mid-August Fitbit revealed their latest fitness tracker with the Charge 3. At the time the device was slated for an October debut here in South Africa, and true to their word it is now available to purchase in SA.

The device is coming in a little bit more expensive than Fitbit had initially outlined two months ago, with the classic edition of the Charge now costing R2 999 instead of R2 599. The special edition is also more expensive at R3 499, opposed to the R3 099 mentioned back in August.

As for why the price has increased, Fitbit informed us during a preview event earlier today that the current poor rand exchange rate and taxing on luxury goods has resulted in the larger price tags.

Given how poorly the rand-dollar is performing at the moment, the increase is understandable, although the previous prices would have been far more tempting. As such Fitbit may find more consumers reach for the classic edition over the special one.

What’s the difference between the two?

The special edition features an NFC chip to facilitate mobile payments, and the classic flavour does not. That’s about it really, with the rest of the devices being the same.

To that end there’s an OLED touchscreen compared to the tap version of the Charge 2. Added to this is seven days worth of battery life according to Fitbit, with 0 to 100 percent charge time taking two hours.

There’s the usual bevy of sensors too, to track your runs, workouts, sleep and swims. The latter is available thanks to a waterproof design that’s good for up to depths of 50 metres.

You’ll also have a few more strap options with the Fitbit Charge 3, with silicone, woven and leather interchangeable bands being brought to our shores as well.

The Fitbit Charge 3 also comes with approval from Discovery Vitality, and will soon support third-party apps like Uber when an update rolls out later in the year.

With Fitbit one of the leaders in the wearables space, the Charge 3 will likely be another best-seller for the company.
