OnePlus plans to be first with 5G smartphone in Europe

The race is on to be the first manufacturer to debut a commercial 5G smartphone next year, and it looks like the Chinese phone makers are vying for the prized spot at the moment.

To that end OnePlus has confirmed its intention to be the first manufacturer to launch a 5G phone in Europe, following the recent debut of its new 6T flagship phone.

“We’re very happy that our efforts with OnePlus will include 5G smartphones in the very near future,” noted Qualcomm’s president Cristiano Amon in reference to the Snapdragon 845 chipset powering the 6T.

“We’re confident we’ll be the first 5G phone in Europe,” added OnePlus CEO Pete Lau.

It should be interesting to see if OnePlus can indeed beat the likes of Huawei to the punch, with the latter already sporting a 5G-capable modem in its Mate 20 Pro smartphone. At this stage though, said modem is only certified to work on the 4.5G spectrum, but that will change next in 2019.

As such the phone that Huawei debuts at MWC 19 in Barcelona next year, should be their fully fledged 5G offering.

Whether OnePlus plans to make an announcement before Huawei at the same consumer tech conference, remains to be seen.

Either it looks like there will be a few new 5G phones landing next year for consumers to choose from, Now the only thing missing is the local 5G network to support the devices.
