The new Yahoo Together app looks a lot like Slack

The say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. So we’re guessing the team behind messaging service Slack should be pleased to see Yahoo Together.

It’s a new messaging app from Yahoo that bares quite a few similarities to Slack.

In terms of look and feel, it seems like Yahoo (and parent company Oath) have done little to differentiate their offering from Slack. More specifically the layout is awfully similar, with users able to create groups (Rooms) in which people can message one another, make custom reactions, as well as upload media for sharing.

It also has a “powerful search” feature for filtering everything on the messaging platform.

While Yahoo Together is strikingly similar to Slack, there are a few key differences.

Yahoo Together is purely mobile for now, available on both Android and iOS, with no desktop version in the works at the moment.

There’s also no peer-to-peer voice calling and it lacks third-party app integration. In terms of how it appears to be marketed too, Yahoo Together is focused more on friends and family rather than the enterprise use that Slack touts.

Perhaps most importantly though, you need to have an active Yahoo account in order to access Together.

As such it should not be too much of a competitor to Slack in its current state.

Whether Yahoo can follow the Slack model and find success remains to be seen, especially given the company’s recent history with extensive data breaches, as The Verge points out.
