Opera browser for Android now boasts a cookie dialog blocker

Opera has released an update for its Android browser which is available today.

The update boasts a new feature in the form of a cookie dialog blocker.

Sure, cookies are annoying but straight up blocking notifications that sites collect them seems odd and Opera’s press release about the feature confuses us even more.

“While cookie alerts are there to give us increased control of our online privacy, continually seeing complex dialog boxes about privacy practices and policies interferes with our browsing experience,” writes Opera.

Cookie dialog boxes are frustrating but as Opera itself points out, they contain information about privacy practices and give you better control of your privacy by way of informing you which sites are using cookies.

Blocking a site from informing you that it may be collecting cookies seems odd to us but if you want to block those notifications you now have the option to.

It’s important to note that the cookie dialog blocker will not block websites from setting cookies, this feature just blocks the notification from the site using cookies.

“The cookie dialog blocker in Opera will attempt to block dialog attempts using a combination of CSS rules and JavaScript heuristics,” the firm explained.

That having been said users can configure the Opera browser so that they can accept all or no cookies or block third-party cookies completely but that requires your manual intervention.

The feature is restricted to the Android browser for now but the firm plans to release it for other Opera products soon.
