Spotify officially launched in South Africa back in March and while we’re not even a year into the services debut on our shores there is a lot of interesting data to look over already.
The data has less to do with users and more to do with what they are listening to and Spotify has shared a few top 10’s with us.
Just a note, the following accounts for streams on Spotify in South Africa during the period 13th March to October 2018.
The first list is the most streamed artist by South Africans.
It’s Drake followed closely by face-tattoo bearing, Post Malone.
Drake also features three times on the 10 most streamed tracks in South Africa.
“In total Drake appeared a further four times on the list of Spotify’s Top Global Songs of Summer 2018 (northern hemisphere). He also consistently dominates the top 10 most streamed songs by South African audiences list since Spotify’s March, 13th South African launch with God’s Plan at number one, In My Feelings at number three and Nice For What at number six,” reports Spotify.
The top ten international artists streamed by South Africans are:
- Post Malone
- Ed Sheeran
- Kanye West
- J. Cole
- The Weeknd
- Maroon 5
For interest’s sake here are the ten most streamed tracks in South Africa by international artists.

While hip-hop dominates when it comes to international streams, South African’s listening to local music appear to have a wider variety of tastes.
Make no mistake, local hip-hop artists are popular but then so is Afrikaans group SnotKop (which I never thought I’d ever write) and local loop-box maestro Jeremy Loops.
