Did Spider-Man really kill Gwen Stacy? Science says maybe not

The death of Gwen Stacy in the Spider-Man comics is established canon that nobody should dare mess with.

That’s what fans will tell you but the folks over at the Because Science YouTube channel have introduced some research into the death of character and the results are rather interesting to say the least.

Using lore from the comic book event as well as real world science, Kyle Hill dissects the death of Spidey’s girlfriend in The Amazing Spider-Man #121.

In that comic Green Goblin abducts Stacy who is later thrown from the Brooklyn Bridge. Spidey, in an attempt to save his girl shoots out a string of web to catch her. In doing so Spider-Man kills Stacy given the abrupt stop at which she arrives when the web catches her.

At least that’s what we all believed until today.

Using known data about spider silk’s strength, the maximum tension that spider silk can withstand along with some maths, Hill finds that Stacy could have survived that fall.

There are a few caveats but the crux of the matter is that Stacy didn’t have to die in the comics.

You can check out the full video from Because Science below. While you’re here we highly recommend checking out the channel’s other content which dives into questions such as whether Fallout’s mini nukes are real, how a lightsaber would really work and of course, Hill’s incredible hair.
