International grand committee urges Mark Zuckerberg to attend hearing on fake news and sundry

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is a seemingly hard man to nail down.

We say this because five nations have urged Zuckerberg to attend a joint hearing on the spread of misinformation, fake news and online influence campaigns.

The five nations – Argentina, Australia, Ireland, the UK and Canada – signed a letter sent to Zuckerberg which says he ought to attend this hearing.

“As you will see from the list of signatories to this letter, the ‘grand committee’ on disinformation and fake news is growing. Five parliaments are now calling on you to do the right thing by the 170 million users in the countries they represent,” reads the letter.

The prompt for this letter was Zuckerberg declining an invitation to attend a joint hearing held by British and Canadian officials to testify on the aforementioned matter on 27th November last week.

“It is not possible for Mr. Zuckerberg to be available to all Parliaments,” Facebook said according to a report by CBS.

This response did not sit well with the international grand committee.

“We were very disappointed in this dismissive response,” they added.

The committee has said that Zuckerberg’s evidence is now overdue and urgent and he should take up his responsibility to Facebook users and speak to their elected representatives.

“You appeared before committees of the US Congress and Senate, as well as the European Parliament. As the Chairs of the relevant committees in the UK, Canadian, Australian, Argentinian and Irish Parliaments, we believe that you owe Facebook users in our countries the same line of accountability,” reads the letter.

Zuckerberg has until 12th November to respond to the the committee’s request.
