Gauteng province still to place 748 late application students for 2019

We are left with eight weeks until 2018 comes to an end, and a further two weeks for schools to reopen in 2019.

Some parents are still left with uncertainty, however, as an estimated 748 students are still waiting to be placed in Gauteng schools. These are Grade 1 students and Grade 8 students who wish to start at their respective primary and high schools next year.

All schools from the Johannesburg Central, Johannesburg East and Tshwane South Districts were up to their full capacity, according to the Gauteng Department of Education.

Registrations for 2019 online applications were opened between 16th April 2018 to 18th May 2018 for Gauteng. To date the department has placed 257 648 students in total, with 136 739 of those in Grade 1 and 120 909 are in Grade 8.

The Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson Steve Mabona has promised that a new application date would be announced in due course and only schools which have space would be listed on the system to accommodate late applications.

“Parents are directed to submit required documentation at identified schools, the department is fully aware that some parents are visiting district offices to enquire about late registrations. Parents should note that the system will only be open for late applications after all applicants who have applied during the registration period are placed,” said Mabona in a statement to News24.

For now, parents will still have to be patient and wait until further notice from the department to announce their open dates for late applications.

For any enquiries parents have been encouraged to send their admissions to hotline@gauteng.gov.za.
