Microsoft Studios acquires Obsidian Entertainment and inXile Entertainment

At E3 earlier this year, part of Microsoft’s Xbox presentation focused on studio acquisitions.

At the time the firm revealed that it had acquired The Initiative, Undead Labs, Ninja Theory and Compulsion Games. Now Microsoft has announced its intent to acquire two more teams joining its now, 13 team strong development crew.

The first studio is Obsidian Entertainment. The studio is best known for Fallout: New Vegas and the Pillars of Eternity series.

The second studio is behind titles such as Wasteland 2, Torment: Tides of Numenera, inXile Entertainment.

“It was important for us to find studio partners who have strong creative visions, a mastery of their medium and are expert world-builders. Obsidian and inXile embody all of these qualities while also bringing expertise on the PC platform and a unique RPG focus to the table,” corporate vice president at Microsoft Studios, Matt Booty said.

So far then Microsoft Studios’ acquisitions are looking rather exciting not just for the Xbox fans but PC gamers as well.

“I’m excited to see the teams maximize their potential at Microsoft and can’t wait for what the future has in store,” concluded Booty.

The gaming world is in line for a new console generation and these acquisitions might be good news for both the current Xbox generation and the next.

While Sony has “won” this generation of consoles in the game department, Microsoft does have the best hardware in the Xbox One X. Perhaps the next generation will see the tides change slightly thanks to these acquisitions.

Whatever the future does hold we’re excited to see what Obsidian and inXile have in store for us.
