Nintendo to cancel streaming on the Wii from January 2019

Do you still have a Nintendo Wii?

Well this latest announcement from Nintendo likely spells the beginning of the end for the console, as the Japanese company confirms that it will be ending support for all streaming platforms on 31st January 2019.

This includes Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime Video, which all served as the major streaming options available on the Wii.

There’s been no precise indication from Nintendo as to why it has opted to do so, but they did also announce that the Wii Shop Channel will be coming to an end as well. The service facilitates the download of virtual games for the Wii, but will not be available from 30th January onwards.

As such it looks like the Nintendo Wii is having all of the value-added services stripped away from it. Whether that means more features, platforms and functionality is on the cards for the Nintendo Switch, however, remains to be seen.

Nevertheless it looks like the Nintendo Wii will soon become a collector’s item console.
