Over $1 billion has been raised for causes on Facebook

Facebook is not without its flaws but today we bring you a slice of good news from the social giant.

With help from Facebook’s charitable giving tools, as much as $1 billion has been raised and donated to causes around the world.

“Since Facebook introduced charitable giving tools in 2015, people have raised over $1 billion, and over 20 million people have either donated to or started a fundraiser on Facebook. Nonprofit organizations also continue to grow on Facebook, with more than 1 million nonprofits in 19 countries that can receive donations directly through Facebook,” the social network said in a press statement.

Some highlights that contributed to that figure include Save the Children raising more than $7.5 million in the past two years which contributed to helping 6.5 million children in 60 countries. The International Rescue Committee has received over 27 000 donations thanks to Facebook’s tools.

The firm also announced that it would be launching its nonprofit fundraising tools in Canada and Australia.

Those tools aren’t available in South Africa at time of publication.

Facebook and PayPal also announced that they would taking part in Giving Tuesday (27th November) where the two entities would match donations made to eligible nonprofits on Facebook up to $7 million. The matching dollars will only be available to US-based nonprofits.

It’s nice to see Facebook’s name tied to some good news for once.
