US Nintendo CEO says chances of an N64 Classic are slim… for now

Few companies have had the same kind of success that Nintendo has when it comes to tapping into nostalgia.

The Japanese gaming firm’s recent tactics of re-issuing some of its iconic retro consoles for a new generation of gamers has yielded dividends, with the Classic Mini NES and Super NES Classic consoles in particular proving hits.

So what’s next for the company retro re-issues?

Apparently not the N64 Classic, for now anyway.

In an interview with Kotaku, CEO of Nintendo America Reggie Fils-Aime said that the company has not ruled out the possibility of an N64 Classic, but that it is not in their immediate planning at this stage.

“I would not ever rule something out,” says Fils-Aime. “But what I can tell you is certainly that’s not in our planning horizon,” he adds.

As such we could indeed see an N64 Classic in future, but not anytime soon, with Fils-Aime noting that the company’s strategy for the retro consoles was to fill the gap between the Wii U and Switch, offering Nintendo gamers something different to try out.

“We were clear when we did the first two Classic series that, for us, these were limited time opportunities that were a way for us as a business to bridge from the conclusion of Wii U as a hardware system to the launch of Nintendo Switch. That was the very strategic reason we launched the NES Classic system,” says Fils-Aime.

Reading into that what we will, it could then turn out that Nintendo will only go the retro re-release route only when next-gen or refreshed versions of its latest hardware comes to market.

We might then have to wait for the Nintendo Switch 2, which is reportedly on the way next year.
