AdvTech planning to build new private university in KwaZulu-Natal

Despite the fact that the number of high school graduates who have acquired a Bachelor’s pass has increased in recent years, South Africa still faces a problem in the number of registered tertiary education institutions available.

Trying to assist in that regard is AdvTech, which focuses on investment and growth of the higher education institutions in South Africa.

AdvTech is currently in talks with Tongaat Hulett to set up an all-new private university campus for 10 000 students in KwaZulu-Natal, located in the Sibaya development node 6 near Umdloti.

The development is said to be valued over R1 billion and it will be a catalytic project for the eThekwini municipality. Tongaat Hulett identified a new site for the university in ‘Node 3’ of it’s multi-billion rand Sibaya Coastal Precinct.

AdvTech is the same company that acquired Monash University South Africa earlier this year and has existing brands such as Varsity College, Rosebank College and Vega under its belt.

The company did not go into finer details when talking to Moneyweb this week, with the CEO Roy Douglas stating that, “Given that we continually have numerous projects at various stages of realisation, we have a policy of not discussing any projects potential or otherwise, before all proper processes have been followed.”

“We can however confirm that AdvTech is investigating the establishment of school in the region, and that the Independent Institute of Education, the largest private higher education provider in South Africa and a brand of AdvTech, is investigating a number of opportunities to establish a new campus for its highly respected Varsity College and Vega brands,” he added.

Responding to further queries this week, Roy Wilkinson, head of portfolio strategy at Tongaat Hulett developments said an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) was currently underway for both Nodes 3 and 6 at Sibaya.

“We will be guided by the outcome of the EIA process on which site to develop the proposed new tertiary institution. The EIA process is specifically concerned with identifying the most appropriate site given all the identified potential impacts and considering all relevant factors, including economic, social, ecological, infrastructural and so on,” noted Wilkinson.
