Leica’s new D-Lux 7 is a repackaged Panasonic LX100 II

Lately Leica has adopted a new tactic when it comes to its compact camera offerings by repackaging some Panasonic devices, adding a few extras and slapping a bigger price tag on them.

The latest camera to do that is the new Leica D-Lux 7, which the company is classing as a high performance compact camera.

To that end it features a DC Vario-Summilux 10.9–34 mm f/1.7–2.8 ASPH. zoom lens, which is paired with a new 17 megapixel four-thirds higher resolution sensor.

That mix of lens components is akin to what we’ve seen on Panasonic’s LX100 II, as Engadget points out, with a similar looking design and layout, albeit with Leica’s signature retro stylings.

Leica also notes that the D-Lux 7 is particular good while shooting in low light conditions, but we’d have to test it out ourselves in order to validate their claims.

Along with an improved lens setup, the Leica D-Lux 7 also features a 2.8 megapixel electronic viewfinder, as well as a 3″ LCD touchscreen display on the rear. Added to this is the ability to record 4K video at 30 fps for up to 15 minutes.

As for the price, being a Leica product the D-Lux 7 is naturally on the expensive side and costs a recommended $1 195 (~R16 783), making it one of the more pricey compact cameras on the market.

At that price, we’d much rather suggest going for a well specced DSLR or mirrorless camera from another manufacturer.

That said, price has never been a barrier for people wanting to buy Leica cameras.
