Samsung workers who developed cancer and other diseases get $133 000 and an apology

A dispute involving Samsung and workers who contracted diseases – including cancer – while working at Samsung’s semi-conductor and LCD factories has reached a conclusion.

The dispute emerged in 2007 when workers said that staff members at Samsung LCD and semiconductor factories had contracted various forms of cancer and some had even died.

According to a report by Aljazeera as many as 320 people developed diseases after working at Samsung Electronics with 118 of that group dying.

Earlier this month a deal was announced which would see Samsung having to pay compensation of $133 000 in each case.

This agreement is applicable to all workers at Samsung Electronics plants starting from 1984 who may have been affected by rare illnesses, miscarriages, congenital diseases suffered by worker’s children and 16 different varieties of cancer.

The firm also issued an apology earlier today.

“We sincerely apologise to the workers who suffered from illness and their families,” Samsung co-president Kim Ki-nam said.

“We have failed to properly manage health risks at our semiconductor and LCD factories.”

We imagine that families who have suffered loss because of Samsung’s inability to manage health risks this apology rings hollow.

While compensation is a commendable notion we’re not ignoring the fact that this case went on for 10 years before reaching its conclusion.

Be better Samsung.
