Fallout 76 Diary – Making friends with parasites

Fallout 76 is a massive game and while we work on our review we are penning a diary from the perspective of the player’s character.

After over a week it appears as if hype surrounding the game has died down somewhat and encountering other players is becoming a rarity.

While it’s nice to not to hear random conversations going on around the world it is also starting to feel rather lonely. Our first diary entry can be found here.

Entry 7

Today I went exploring because let’s face it, there isn’t much to do here in Appalachia. For the last few days I’ve kept to the area around my hut while ransacking houses looking for scraps but today I ventured beyond the mountain.

Things were fine at first. I discovered a mining operation in nearby Charleston. What was most bizarre was that the mining was happening below a building in the centre of town.

After stealing a few minerals I looked at my handy map and decided to investigate a bridge, the New River Gorge Bridge to be exact.

This was a mistake.

No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.

I used so much ammunition taking out Scorched, Feral Ghouls and bugs that I’m now having to avoid most fights I find myself accidentally stumbling into. This is what I get for not making strength training a priority.

Luckily I made it back to camp alive but all my food is rotting and I’m starting to feel rather hungry. Guess I’m hunting with a security baton tomorrow.

The good news is I now have a bed.

Entry 8

I found an amusement park today. I’d say it was fun, if it were but once again Appalachia has let me down. Being inside an amusement park that is overrun with mutated humans and bugs is the furthest thing from amusing I could imagine.

Thankfully I found some snacks that helped ease the pain of hunger I’ve been feeling lately. Sometimes I feel like my stomach is a bottomless pit that needs fueling every 30 minutes.

After a depressing stint at the amusement park I claimed a workshop from some Scorched at a nearby destruction derby track. This should make for a nice satellite office from my base of operations as I trundle through this desolate, lonely wasteland.

It’s mine, all mine!

The other vault dwellers that exited Vault 76 on Reclamation Day have seemingly disappeared. Now and then I hear gun fire hoping its a friendly face but it’s always two groups of enemies having a go at one another.

Those early days where I was running into other folks have disappeared. I haven’t seen another human in days.

Entry 9

While exploring I stumbled into Point Pleasant. I have no doubt that this was a lovely town before the Great War but time and the current citizenry of Scorched and Super Mutants have changed it.

That having been said I found a lovely bench near the water to snap some selfies and eat some dog food.

After lunch I pottered around a bit more and found, er, an altar.

Atop the altar were human bones and hundreds of candles. The altar appears to be for the Mothman, a mythical creature our parents warned us about back in the vault.

While I don’t want to run into the creature I do wish I knew who built the altar. Is there a secret society praying to the Mothman? Are they still here? Is anybody here?

This happens a lot in Appalachia. There great scenes and fascinating places to see but nobody to tell you more about them or warn you of the dangers.

I’ve also discovered that the Workshop at the destruction derby has been reclaimed by Super Mutants. They can keep it, I have minimal ammo and no desire to fight them for hours.

Entry 10

After weeks of eating and immediately being hungry again I discovered that I, in fact, have parasites all over me.

My PipBoy doesn’t exactly tell me what these parasites do aside from “Periodic food loss” so I’m left to guess whether the parasites are eating the food in my bag or eating the food in my gut.

Given how hungry I am I’m inclined to think it’s the former.

That having been said these parasites are the first living thing I’ve met in weeks that isn’t trying to kill me with a gun. Perhaps we can be friends.

At least this is better than the mutation I got after falling into a pool of toxic waste though that was easier to cure than these parasites.

Entry 11

The more time I spend in Appalachia the more depressed I become.

Earlier today I travelled to New River Gorge Bridge and jumped off of it to end it all.

Clearly that didn’t work considering I’m telling you about it now.

I woke up at the top of the bridge a few metres from where I jumped. Somehow a Scorched enemy many levels above me had appeared as well. After a brief fight (I say fight but it was really just me jumping away) I travelled back to camp, depressed.

Maybe if I just lay in bed for week I will disappear from Appalachia just like all the citizens, responders, Brother of Steel members and raiders that were supposedly here before me.

I was meant to be finding the Overseer and following her journey but with all the survival I’ve been doing she will have to wait. Perhaps in a few months I’ll have the strength to find her but as I spend more time alone I feel like I’m just going to die here among the mutants and my friends the parasites.
