Smartcall invests R10 million in local esports house Mettlestate

Purveyor of prepaid cellular services and products, Smartcall, have announced a sizeable investment of R10 million in local esports organisers Mettlestate.

Launched in March 2017, Mettlestate has been championing local esports since inception. Whether it’s organising tournaments or hosting streamers on Twitch, Mettlestate has quickly established itself as an authority in the space.

To date, Mettlestate has given away R2 million in prize money through tournaments around the country. The investment will go a long way to helping Mettlestate grow that prize pool number among other things.

“More leagues mean more opportunities for players at all skill levels and across various gaming titles to compete, with more rewards for the amount of time and passion they put into their craft,” co-founder of Mettlestate, Barry Louzada, said in a statement.

“Any investment big or small by a brand into the industry adds value. This investment by Smartcall will allow us to do even more amazing things and drive even more opportunities for gamers in South Africa. It’s very exciting,” he added.

Speaking on behalf of Smartcall, marketing manager Jan Cronje said that as a firm which plays in the mobile space and an increasing number of games coming to mobile, the investment in Mettlestate was an opportunity.

“With gaming having mobile ties in both the casual and esports space, it would be a wasted opportunity to not get involved in this industry and introduce it to a whole new group of people across South Africa. We’ve been watching and talking to Mettlestate for quite some time now, and their passion, drive and flawless execution of events and leagues that they host makes us feel comfortable that we’ve put our investment in the right place,” Cronje said.

New leagues for various games at a variety of skill levels will be announced in the next few months so if you’re interested in getting involved in esports in anyway be sure to follow Mettlestate over on Facebook, Twitter and Twitch.
