New campaign uses Instagram Stories to highlight impact of gender-based violence

Facebook, Instagram and the Nelson Mandela Foundation have announced a new campaign which will highlight the impact of gender-based violence on South African women and their families.

The campaign will be seen in Instagram Stories as part of an advertising campaign as well as the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s Instagram page.

The stories that folks will see will showcase the plight of women who experience gender-based violence. Viewers will shown adverts that ask them to take action to stop the harassment. Viewers will be prompted to swipe to take action. Those that do will be taken to the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s website where they will be shown a video with a hard hitting message.

We’ve included examples of the stories that you will see in the gallery below.

This campaign was created by Facebook’s Creative Shop team and the all-female production company Darling Films and director Gale Maimane helped craft the stories.

“We are delighted to have this opportunity to combine Creative Shop together with the inspiration from bright, young African creatives. With the reach of our platform we want to help inform and raise awareness about the crisis of violence against women in South Africa. We invite everyone to get involved and have their say,” head of Facebook Creative Shop Africa, Aviv Weil, said.

The campaign also supports Is’thunzi Sabafazi (The Dignity of Women): Building a Caring Society, an event taking place on Thursday this week at the University of Johannesburg’s Soweto Campus.

The event will be facilitated by Redi Tlhabi and keynote speaker Oprah Winfrey. Is’thunzi Sabafazi (The Dignity of Women): Building a Caring Society will also be live streamed on the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s Facebook page.
