Surprise: There’s going to be a game for The LEGO Movie 2

In a move that everyone knew would come eventually: a game for The LEGO Movie 2 has been announced and will be created by LEGO game factory veterans TT Games and Warner Bros..

This new entry has the uninspired title of “The LEGO Movie 2 Videogame” and, unfortunately, does not have a trailer as of yet.

You can find a small gallery of stills in this story, and you can poke around an official site for some promotional information, but that’s it for now. The fact that all the stills look like they could have been pulled out of any modern LEGO game doesn’t exactly fill us with confidence.

What we do know is that the game is coming to the four main platforms – PC, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One – in 2019, but not all at the same time.

Sony and Microsoft consoles as well as PC will receive the title on 26th February, with Switch owners needing to wait exactly one month for the 26th March 2018 release.

What we do know about the game right now is that it will follow the events of the movie with many of the same characters. There will be 100 playable characters with some being brought in from the first movie.

The open world here will be home to the puzzles the LEGO games are known for but the marketing blurb mentioning the mechanic to “Scour the LEGO galaxy for Relics and Master Pieces” has us hopeful that TT Games will be importing some features from the best LEGO game in years: Worlds.

Again, the world will feature elements from the first film, which may be seen as a bit lazy but we’re actually into as it remains a brilliant piece of media both in the way it was built and the final product.

The final big attraction here is an apparently improved combat system. With both the puzzling and combat of past games being insulting easy (even for its young demographic) we’re very happy to see any improvement here.

You may have picked up that we’re not entirely enthused by this news. Not because we’re not big fans of LEGO – we truly are – but because the games are hilariously formulaic and a chore to play after a few hours. As series like Call of Duty and Pokémon are called out for failing to innovate between titles, the LEGO games have remained even more stagnant than either series.

Telltale Games (which, funnily enough, is sometimes confused with TT Games) recently closed in part due to a similar lack of change and we hope the same doesn’t befall TT Games’ LEGO titles but, man, they really need to make something different for once.
