Artifact is out now and I made R163 in the first 30 minutes

There’s a new digital card game on the market as of yesterday evening – Artifact.

The game is a collaboration between game designer Richard Garfield (who you might know as the creator of a little game known as Magic: The Gathering) and Valve.

Unlike Hearthstone and Magic: The Gathering Arena, Artifact charges a flat fee to play the game.

In South Africa that fee is R289 on Steam. For that money you will get two pre-made decks, five event tickets and 10 card packs.

Each card pack contains 12 cards and costs R29. Of those cards one will be a Hero card, two will be item cards and you will get at at least one rare card.

The Hero cards are the important cards in this game as they determine how your deck is built.

There are also a number of ways to play from competitive draft modes and even solo bot match ups. We have to admit, Valve has done a stellar job at giving players a multitude of ways to play.

For new players we highly recommend checking out this thread over on the r/Artifact sub-Reddit.

The other way to get cards

While you can buy card packs from Valve there is another way to get your hands on cards – the Steam Market.

In the market you can sell and buy individual cards that you might need to round out your collection. We must also give Valve credit for baking this functionality right into the Artifact client so you can buy and sell cards without having to Alt+Tab constantly.

Since you are able to buy and sell cards there is a bit of a demand for rare cards. At time of writing the most valuable card we could find was Axe, a Red Hero card.

Following release we opened two of the Hero cards and proceeded to sell one for R156.63. Had we held on to the card for a few hours more, we could have made back the money we spent on the game.

After selling a few of the other extra cards we opened we walked away with R163.

These funds get transferred to your Steam wallet so you can buy more card packs, individual cards or spend the money on a new game from the Steam Store.

We’ve had fun in the short time we’ve spent in Artifact and we’re looking forward to playing the game more and trying out the various modes.

Making a recommendation for Artifact is difficult right now but if you’re a fan of card games this presents a unique approach to the genre and hey, you can make some money off of your cards and in this economy, that’s not a bad thing.
