Hackers attempted to lift customer info from Dell website

Dell has alerted customers to what it is calling a “potential cybersecurity incident”.

We’re puzzled by the use of potential in this case. That’s because the firm has revealed that on 9th November it detected unauthorised activity on its network.

The activity mentioned was an attempt to lift customer information including names, email addresses and hashed passwords from Dell.com.

“Though it is possible some of this information was removed from Dell’s network, our investigations found no conclusive evidence that any was extracted,” Dell said in a statement.

The firm added that credit card and other sensitive information was not targeted in the attempted breach.

“Upon detection of the attempted extraction, Dell immediately implemented countermeasures and initiated an investigation. Dell also retained a digital forensics firm to conduct an independent investigation and has engaged law enforcement,” the firm said.

Customer information from DellEMC.com and DellTechnologies.com was not comprised in the breach, according to the firm.

Dell has asked customers who make use of Dell.com to change their passwords. Customers who have not changed their passwords recently will be prompted to do so upon logging in.

“We are committed to doing everything possible to protect our customers’ data. Dell will continue to invest in our information technology networks and security to detect and prevent the risk of unauthorized activity,” the firm concluded.
