Three Cape Town schools to be the first to pilot Marine Studies to Grade 10 pupils in 2019

Two Oceans Aquarium has partnered with three high schools in Cape Town to introduce Marine Sciences in the curriculum for Grade 10 pupils. Gansbaai Academy, Simon’s Town High and South Peninsula High will be the first schools to offer this subject in January 2019.

This curriculum will cover marine geography and geography, marine chemistry, marine physics, marine biology and humans and the ocean as subdisciplines. The aim of this programme is to guide teachers to introduce this subject as an official matric subject for Grade 10 pupils in 2020.

“This was a significant milestone in the work towards the development of the subject which was to be implemented at schools across the country in 2020,” said Two Oceans Aquarium head of education, Russell Stevens.

This subject will be offered as an after school 8th subject at the selected schools. Teaching will happen twice a week in the afternoon, students will have to pay a minimal amount to the selected schools governing bodies. Interested pupils from neighbouring schools and areas are encouraged to apply.  After successfully completing this subject, pupils will be awarded a Two Oceans Aquarium Grade 12 Marine Sciences certificate when they matriculate.

“Support from senior officials in the Departments of Education has shown recognition for the contribution made by the Two Oceans Aquarium staff in partnering with South Africa’s formal education sector,” concluded Stevens.
