More than a million CO.ZA domains have been registered

South Africa’s internet namespace is burgeoning as the ZA Central Registry (ZACR) announces a massive milestone.

More than 1.2 million co.za, web.za, net.za and org.za second level domains (SLDs) have been registered with 1 117 000 of those being co.za domains.

“South Africa‘s SLDs, with their impressive 1.2 million total registrations, have cemented .ZA‘s standing as one of the world’s most popular namespaces and successfully capped ZACR‘s third decade serving the South African and global Internet consumer,” chief executive officer at ZACR Lucky Masilela said in a statement.

While most companies need a website in 2018 and the local co.za domain makes sense from a branding perspective, Masilela points out another reason so many domains have been registered.

That reason comes down to the Triple R Model which separates functions and responsibilities of the Regulator, the Registry Operator and the Registrar.

“Our current model is the reason South Africa boasts the highest number of Africa’s domain name registrations coupled with our intention to keep the domain costs as low as possible on the continent,” Masilela explains.

This milestone also means that South Africa is now the leading domain name market on the continent. For comparison’s sake Nigeria has only notched up 102 000 registrations of its .ng country domain.
