We’re big fans of Raspberry Pi here at the office, as the computing components and boards this company put together are great value for money options for hobbyists, makers or those with a keen interest in computers.

Their latest offering is one of the cheapest to date, and should definitely appeal to those makers on a budget.

The device in question is a new board called the Raspberry Pi 3 Model A+, and it’s listed to retail for a recommended $25 on the company’s website.

What makes this particular model noteworthy is the fact that it sports many of the features that the Model B+ board features, which also retails for a $10 more.

To that end it has the same quad-core 1.4GHz Broadcom processor and supports Bluetooth 4.2, as well as working on the 2.4GHz and 5.0GHz frequencies for WiFi.

While the Model A+ does indeed borrow a few elements from the B+, there are still a few things missing, such as a lack of ethernet port. It also only has 512MB RAM instead of 1GB, and the Model A+ only caters to a single USB 2.0 slot.

Despite missing some of the bells and whistles, much of the processing capability from the Model B+ is present on the new Pi 3 Model A+, which should certainly make a worthwhile option for makers out there.

If you’re keen on the Raspberry Pi 3 Model A+ board, it is currently listed for purchase on the RS Components SA website, but there is a note stating that the board is on back order and could take four to six days to dispatch to South Africa.

At R370.37 (excl. VAT) it could be well worth the wait though.

If buying a Raspberry Pi is not in the budget this month, why not enter our competition where you could win one (entries close 19th November).
