Apple AirPods with wireless charging planned for release early next year

Whatever your opinion of the Apple AirPods, the company’s fancy earbuds that debuted a couple of years ago have proved a relative hit despite featuring a divisive design.

One of the features planned to be added for a refresh of the earphones was wireless charging, with the AirPower Mat that Apple showcased last year alongside a new case for the AirPods not coming to fruition.

As such it seemed like wireless charging for Apple accessories was something that the company would push to the periphery as it focused on other aspects of its hardware business.

According to reports, however, the fate of wireless charging for the AirPods could be taking a turn for the better.

More specifically Apple Insider is citing noted industry analyst Ming Chi-Kuo, with him stating that the wireless charging functionality is set to be available sometime during the first quarter of 2019.

Along with wireless charging support, the new earphones could also be added a few other features such as Bluetooth 5.0, as well as an updated W-series chip and a more heat-resistant hinge design.

The updated features and components are also said to make the new Apple AirPods more expensive says Kuo.

While the analyst was quite sure on the status of the new AirPods, he did not conform whether the elusive AirPower Mat would be revealed in the same window next year as well.

With no other device expected to be unveiled by Apple within the first three months of 2019, it should be interesting to see if the company does indeed debut the redesigned AirPods solo, or alongside a handful of other refreshed accessories too.
