Quora data breach leaks info from 100 million users

You can now add another high-profile website to the growing list of big data breaches – Quora.

The online platform recently discovered that it suffered a significant data breach that affected the information of an estimated 100 million users.

They confirmed the breach via Twitter, before revealing the full details they know so far on a blog post.

“On Friday we discovered that some user data was compromised by a third party who gained unauthorized access to one of our systems. We’re still investigating the precise causes and in addition to the work being conducted by our internal security teams, we have retained a leading digital forensics and security firm to assist us. We have also notified law enforcement officials,” writes Quora CEO Adam D’Angelo.

The breach was discovered on 30th November last week, with Quora’s investigation into the issue still ongoing. For now they’ve disclosed that a host of information was taken from the site, including user names, addresses, encrypted passwords, community answers, comments and upvotes.

Currently Quora is contacting its users about the breach via email, and advising them to no longer use their older encrypted passwords.

“It is our responsibility to make sure things like this don’t happen, and we failed to meet that responsibility. We recognize that in order to maintain user trust, we need to work very hard to make sure this does not happen again,” concludes D’Angelo.
