Tumblr to ban all adult content on 17th December

Last month the iOS version of the Tumblr app went missing from the App Store.

At the time the reason was unknown, but many thought it had something to do with the ongoing problem of sexually inappropriate content, and images fo underage children in particular, that was the issue.

While Tumblr has not confirmed or denied such report, the platform has made a significant announcement as all adult content will be banned from 17th December onwards.

With the platform struggling to properly police explicit content on its platform, this latest move seeks to eliminate the issue altogether, although it remains to be seen how the Tumblr community will react to the change.

Also interesting to see play out is how Tumblr will handle “adult” content that fringes on appropriate and inappropriate. Breastfeeding for example, or images of medical conditions, will still be permitted on the platform, but that said any user can still lay a formal complaint about a piece of content and potentially have it removed.

“If you spot a post that you don’t think belongs on Tumblr, period, you can report it: From the dashboard or in search results, tap or click the share menu (paper airplane) at the bottom of the post, and hit ‘Report,'” reads Tumblr’s announcement.

“Adult content primarily includes photos, videos, or GIFs that show real-life human genitals or female-presenting nipples, and any content—including photos, videos, GIFs and illustrations—that depicts sex acts,” it continues.

As for content that was marked explicit before the ban announcement, Tumblr says these posts will be set to private. “Blogs that have been either self-flagged or flagged by us as ‘explicit’ per our old policy and before December 17, 2018 will still be overlaid with a content filter when viewing these blogs directly,” the press statement says.

Should said explicit content be deemed to grossly infringe on Tumblr’s new policy, it will be removed from the platform altogether.
