Remember Google Allo? It’s being shut down

A few years ago it seemed like every firm in Silicon Valley was releasing a new chat app to rival WhatsApp.

One of the apps that managed to make it all the way to 2018 without being shut down is Google Allo. Sadly, Allo won’t see the sun go down on 2019.

That’s because Google has announced that come March 2019, Allo will be shut down.

“Allo will continue to work through March 2019 and until then, you’ll be able to export all of your existing conversation history from the app,” vice president of consumer communications products at Google, Matt Klainer explained.

Google says that it learned a lot from Allo and it has incorporated a number of features from that app into Messages for Android smartphones. At present Messages/RCS Chat has support from 40 carriers and device makers, with more than 175 million people using Messages every month.

It makes sense then that Google is dropping Allo and focusing on Messages.

“We want every single Android device to have a great default messaging experience. We’ve been working closely with the mobile industry to upgrade SMS so that people around the world can more easily enjoy group chats, share high-res photos, and get read receipts on any Android device,” Klainer said.

For the handful of users still using Allo you can find out how to download your chats and media here.
