Dept of Transport to tackle driver’s licence backlog now that strike is over

Many motorists who need their driver’s licence renewed may have been driving illegally as the Department of Transport was unable to print out new cards.

This is as in August the Driving Licence Card Account (DLCA) employees engaged in a strike, where they demanded permanent employment after DLCA was taken over by the Department of Transport.

The strike has since ended, but the downtime has meant there was a backlog of cards that needed to be issued, resulting in prolonged delays for motorists wanting to get their licences renewed.

“We had a strike that went on but equally at that time we had an upgrade of the production system, and we had taken about three weeks to do that, as a result we had a backlog of a number of cards,” said DLCA CEO Collins Letsoalo in an interview with The South African.

With the strike now over the DLCA has currently printed over 800 000 licence cards with 500 000 of these having been dispatched to various district offices around the country.

“An outstanding 90 000 driver’s licences will be printed within the next three weeks”, a spokesperson told Centurion Rekord.

Whether the Department of Transport will be able to take care of the backlog in the coming months remains to be seen.
