New History curriculum gets thumbs up from Minister of Basic Education

Earlier this year the Ministerial Task Team (MTT) (PDF) presented their recommendations to the Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, to realign the history curriculum to make it more afrocentric and relevant to South African students.

The MTT is led by Professor Sifiso Ndlovu, who has been given the mandate by the Minister to set the direction of how History is taught in the country. The MTT’s recommendations also suggested that Life Orientation (LO) should make way for History as one of the compulsory subjects starting from Grade 10 to 12.

“I believe that a comprehensive well-rounded and accurate teaching of History will help our learners understand themselves better and assist the country in moving forward together, said Motshekga to Sowetan Live.

The new terms for the task team will include the development of a new History curriculum for Grades 4 to 12. The MTT will also have to conduct a provincial consultation in the education sector to find inputs into the new History curriculum. All textbooks will be screened to ensure they align with the new curriculum, along with proposing teacher development programmes for both initial teacher education as well as in-service teacher education.

The main focus for the new History curriculum is to ensure that it is representative for the nation and covers multiple perspectives rather than one main dominant and specific narrative.

“I have faith in the team of experts that are going to be forging the way forward in terms of how we teach our young people about the past,” concludes Motshekga.
