Hypertext Gift Guide 2018: Tech accessories

In the current economy giving somebody a brand new iPhone Xs Max might not be the most fiscally responsible decision.

Granted, we are now out of the technical recession we found ourselves in recently but that doesn’t mean we should be splurging. Hell, even during Black Friday, South Africans spent less than previous years.

So with spending taking a back seat we thought we’d share some tech accessories the techie or geek in your life would enjoy receiving from you this festive season while keeping your bank balance healthy for the three months of January.

Xbox One Elite Controller

The upper echelon of gaming accessories is definitely something that any gamer would be gleeful receiving and the Xbox One Elite controller occupies that space.

At nearly R3 000 it is pricey but it can be fully customised to suit your particular grip. Interchangeable paddles, D-pads and thumbsticks are included and overall it’s a pleasure to hold.

If any family members are looking to get us a gift, this is the first choice.

The Xbox One Elite Controller is available for R2 599 through Takealot.

Nacon Revolution Pro PlayStation 4 controller

The symmetric controller that has long occupied the input port on PlayStation consoles is great, for some.

We are fans of both controller layouts (Xbox’s asymmetric controller being the other layout) but we understand that not every player likes the PlayStation layout.

The Nacon revolution Pro Controller for the PlayStation 4 is basically just a PlayStation 4 controller with an Xbox layout.

Regarding both of these controller choices we highly recommend consulting with the person you’re buying these for or gifting them the slip as well in case they want to exchange it.

The Nacon Revolution Pro PlayStation 4 is available for R1 299 via Takealot.

Substantial power banks

I have as many as two power banks, neither of which I purchased. Both were gifts and they have served me so well I cannot help but recommend spending a bit of dough on a decent one for a friend or loved one.

Sure, it’s not the most exciting gift but techies love practical stuff they can use.

We recommend going for at least a 10 000mAh power bank and while you’re at it pick up a cable for the person to pair with the power bank.

The Xiaomi 10 000mAh power bank is just R299 at Takealot.

MicroSD card

Anybody shopping for someone who owns an Nintendo Switch or takes an inordinate amount of smartphone photos, a microSD card will surely be a useful gadget for you to pick up for them.

We recommend a substantial 128GB microSD card which can be purchased for under R800 depending on where you shop.

As regards microSD cards for an Nintendo Switch we recommend looking for a card with a Class 10 speed rating just to insure there are no issues when the giftee uses it for games.

MicroSD cards are available at all major technology retailers around South Africa.

Bluetooth speaker

We’ve used a number of Bluetooth speakers in our time and the one thing they all have in common is the fact that they are incredibly useful.

For anybody struggling to find a gift this festive season we highly recommend looking for a Bluetooth speaker.

Seeing as we are in the summer months look for something that has a bit of water resistance such as the JBL Flip 3 which boasts splash resistance. A sizeable battery is also something of a requirement seeing as the device uses Bluetooth which drains a battery at a rate of knots.

The JBL Flip 3 is available for R1 399 through Takealot.

USB extension cables

Perhaps don’t make this your primary gift but include it with one of our other suggestions. Charging cables for smartphones are notoriously short as are the cables for console charging. To solve that we use USB extension cables.

Of course you can just get a really long USB cable in the form factor you need but these little accessories are so useful we don’t go anywhere without them. They are cheap as chips and can be found at most major technology retailers.
