Nike to sell first self-lacing basketball shoes next year for $350

It’s been awhile since we’ve heard about any new developments on the self-lacing shoe front from Nike.

Perhaps it’s fortuitous then that a recent investor call made mention of the company’s plan to release a basketball-focused self-lacing shoe for 2019.

During the call they termed the shoe as being “adaptive” but it’s unclear what that means exactly. What is known is that it would retail in the States for around $350 (~R5 019) which is well over what one would normally pay for a Nike or Jordan-branded pair of basketball shoes.

“We have a smart shoe designed for the perfect FIT and it’s a major step in advancing and connecting our digital transformation to product,” said Nike’s CEO Mark Parker.

As such, it should be interesting to see if people will actually want to buy them. Consequently Nike may look to tap into the star power of some of its basketball athletes like LeBron James or Kevin Durant, both of whom have their own signature shoe lines with the company.

An even better idea in our opinion would be for Nike to leverage its own self-lacing lore, and in particular make the shoes look similar to the MAGs that Marty McFly dons in Back to the Future. Those same shoes have also been touting Nike’s self-lacing technology, but have always been limited or special editions.

With Nike leading the way in terms of self-lacing tech, perhaps this upcoming basketball shoe will be the start of the company branching into other sports.
