Hypertext 2018 Gift Guide: Stocking stuffers

As much as we love getting gifts that are the size of our head or bigger, there’s something special about getting a smaller gift that was picked out especially for you.

We like to call these smaller gifts “stocking stuffers” because, well, you stuff them in a stocking to fill it up.

Usually these are sweets, chocolates and other treats that you can enjoy while you wait for your festive meal but we’re changing the game this year and suggesting you fill your stockings with tech treats.

What follows are some smaller, budget-friendly gift suggestions for the techie in your life.

Showmax/Netflix vouchers

Rather than spending money on a Blu-Ray or DVD of a show/movie somebody likes give them the gift of choice.

Both Showmax and Netflix offer gift cards for you to purchase. These gift cards add credit to your account which can in turn be used to pay for your subscription. We actually received a Showmax gift card last year over Christmas and it was a welcome surprise in January when our bank account wasn’t in the best shape.

While Netflix has announced that vouchers are available in South Africa we’ve only spotted them at one CNA on the West Rand so you might have to do a bit of shopping around this festive season.

Showmax vouchers can be found at Pick n Pay, Checkers, CNA and most big name retailers throughout South Africa.

Other vouchers you might want to consider include vouchers for Google Play and the Apple App Store where you can buy movies, music, games and apps.

Funko Pops

While we enjoy watching our bobbleheads shake on our desk as we type we do recognise that not everybody likes the strange figurines.

That having been said Funko Pops do make for great stocking fillers though they do fetch between R150 – R300 a piece depending on the character and availability.

You can find an extensive range of Funko Pops over at Raru and at most toy stores.

Gift cards

Once again the gift of choice makes an appearance. Gift vouchers have changed from when we were kids. Many malls now offer a gift card service and the best part is that if its a Visa or Maestro card you aren’t restricted to one particular mall or store for that matter.

Often, these cards can even be reused and more money can be added on to them.

Visit your local mall to find out whether they offer gift vouchers in the form factor similar to that of a debit card.

Cable organisers

Our desk was regularly a nest of cables until somebody had the great idea to gift us some cable organiser clips.

These flexible clips keep cables in place while still allowing them the freedom to move. You can easily remove cables and they keep things neat and tidy on your desk, car or behind the TV.

Painfully useful and incredibly cheap at R29 for two at Takealot.

If you’re still struggling to find a great gift why not check out our odd hardware podcast from earlier this year.

We checked out a Nerf gun, a Joby GorillaPod for mobile phones and a vertical mouse and perhaps one of those will be the gift you’re looking for.
