Hypertext Top Five of 2018: Games

Let’s be honest, this year was not the best for games. That’s not to say that there weren’t many games released but rather that the real stars were few and far between.

There were times where we felt like every good release required a bad release to follow it and as such picking five great games to tell you about was much harder than we expected it to be.

That having been said we’ve spent hours deliberating and we now have five games that we think showed folks that gaming can still be great in 2018.

5 – Vampyr (PS4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch)

Many may raise an eye at the inclusion of Vampyr but we feel that everybody should play this game. The controls can be tricky and the difficulty can be immense at times but the moral quandary the game puts you in from the word go is unlike anything we’ve experienced.

Players will take on the role of Jonathan Reid, a doctor returning to London who runs into a vampire. The streets of London are infested with evil and it’s up to the player to decide whether they will succumb to the evil or help London rebuild.

Vampyr is available for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.

4 – Destiny 2: Forsaken (PS4, Xbox One, PC)

Bungie reinvigorated our love of Destiny 2 with the most recent expansion Forsaken.

The story is engaging although incredibly short but Bungie has packed enough quests and end game activities into Forsaken that even after you reach the level cap you’ll be pushing to increase your power.

The star of the show however is Gambit. A weird cross between PvP and PvE modes, Gambit is fast paced and exhibits a level of creativity we haven’t seen in a while.

We’re keen to see where this game goes and it’s well worth a look if like us Warmind left you wanting.

With content already coming out for the next year of Destiny 2 we think that now is the time to get back into the game.

Destiny 2: Forsaken is available for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.

3 – Assassin’s Creed Odyssey (PS4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch)

After 10 hours in this game I was ready to uninstall it and try something new, but then something within me clicked and I went on to spend another 70 hours in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.

The main story is great and the side quests and other activities around the world will keep you running around, at times forgetting you have a main quest to complete.

Mythical creatures, hordes of enemies and enough Greek history to shake a spear at combine to make Odyssey the best Assassin’s Creed game yet.

2 – Red Dead Redemption 2 (PS4, Xbox One)

Our top two was always going to come down to these two games and thanks to a democratic vote Red Dead Redemption 2 comes second.

The game is fantastic and it’s no wonder that fans of Rockstar games are so patient and willing to wait generations for a new game.

RDR2 is a prequel to the first game but builds on the successes of that game. The graphics are also wonderful to behold from forests to snow-capped mountains and beaches, RDR2 will take your breath away regularly.

We struggle to find the words to describe this masterpiece from Rockstar but we hope that it enjoys a long life and eventually finds its way to PC. Pretty please Rockstar?

Red Dead Redemption 2 is available for Xbox One and PlayStation 4

1 – God of War (PS4)

Santa Monica Studios’ reboot of the God of War franchise is difficult to fault.

The more serious tone of a father and son’s journey through the lore filled world of Midgard is spectacular. The storytelling is expertly done and Christopher Judge provides the best voice for Kratos we have yet to hear.

The game pushes the PlayStation 4’s graphics to the limit and we aren’t afraid to admit we spent hours in the photo mode getting great shots.

The combat is wonderful and rather than mashing buttons players will need to be more methodical in how they tackle the game.

Every character is memorable and you will not be able to get Bear McCreary’s sound track out of your head for weeks.

The one problem we have with God of War was that there wasn’t more for us to enjoy. Thankfully a New Game+ mode solves that, letting you re-explore the game once you’ve let the final moments sink in.

God of War is hands down the best game of 2018 and we’d even go so far as to say it’s the system seller the PlayStation 4 has always needed.
