Four benefits that developing STEM skills will have on today’s learners

We are currently in the midst of the fourth industrial revolution, with disruptive technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), robotics, virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI) changing the way we live and work.

It’s not just businesses and government that needs to think of better approaches in incorporating technology, but schools as well, to ensure that students can be better equipped for the future.

To this end Microsoft has collaborated with Mckinsey & Co to conduct research which revealed that by 2030, up to 375 million people will need to switch from the work they are doing today.

According to Microsoft this means that students need to be future ready and equipped with both traditional numeracy and literacy capabilities, as well as STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and computer science skills.

Following the research Microsoft has come up with four benefits to incorporating technology in classrooms.

Personalised learning

According to Microsoft, teachers should incorporate blending learning and adaptive learning techniques. This method creates inclusive classroom environments that designs and supports the needs of learners. This will in turn personalise lessons, and combines technology with face-to-face interactions.

Gamification

Microsoft found out that gaming was a popular way for teachers to encourage student management as an effective way of teaching computer science in schools. Apps such as Microsoft MakeCode brings computer science to life for all students, according to the company. This platform helps students learn coding as well as build their ability to be creative.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) accessibility

Microsoft, like many tech organisations, is realising that the AI revolution has begun on the African continent. This will empower and enable schools and teachers to do more than they have done before, says Microsoft. Apps contained in the Office 365 such as Microsoft Intelligence cloud, along with  AI helping teachers improve their  outcomes for learners.

Mixed Reality

Mixed reality is the combination of augmented reality and virtual reality. This will enable learners to experience their curriculum in a new way, according to Microsoft. Equipping learners with feature-rich technology and providing teachers with proven digital platforms and access to adaptive assessment tools will give schools the opportunity to engage students in new and interesting ways.
