Getting pregnant, Listeriosis and load shedding: What SA searched for in 2018

Earlier today we brought you what the world searched for on Pornhub but not we turn our attention to the safer for work search engine, Google.

This year saw no shortage of news worthy events. The president stepped down, cold meats were tainted and Beyonce came to South Africa to perform.

As such the top trending searches for this year reflect this.

Taking a look at the top “near me” searches made by users reveals that “Jobs near me” was the most popular term in South Africa. This was ostensibly helped along by the fact that Google baked job searches into its platform earlier this year. Searches for food also came out tops

A tale of two presidents

Given that this year saw a shift in the South African presidency it should come as no surprise that Jacob Zuma and Cyril Ramaphosa were the top trending personalities this year.

Looking at questions, South Africans searched for a number of pertinent things such as “what is listeriosis” and “what time is the royal wedding”. That having been said a fair few number of people searched for “how to get pregnant”.

Google also compiled a video of the year in search. We missed the beginning because somebody was chopping onions nearby but it’s worth a watch.
