Hypertext 2018 Gift Guide: Budget smartphones

The festive season is open us, and while we’re all feeling the pinch financially at the moment, there are still some savvy ways to get great gifts for friends, loved ones, family, and even yourself.

One such area is budget smartphones, with a number of great options on the market that won’t break the bank.

With that in mind, we’ve rounded up six budget smartphones that offer great value for money and should hopefully put a smile on the recipient’s face.

Samsung Galaxy A7

Yes, we know the Samsung Galaxy A7 retails for R8 499 (RRP), which places at the very high-end of budget, but think about this phone as an investment.

Looking at some of the other premium mid-range devices on the market, the Galaxy A7 is one of the best specced, not to mention there being a strong presence for the Samsung brand locally which means repairs, accessories and after sales service should be easy to find.

Add to that the trio of powerful cameras on the rear, and the Galaxy A7 makes a lot of sense for those who wish to up their smartphone photography game.

The Samsung Galaxy A7 can be purchased on Takealot here.

Nokia 7 Plus

Nokia, now being manufactured by HMD Global, has been leading the way of late when it comes to value for money devices. While we cannot list their Nokia 8 Sirocco on this list, an offering the Nokia 7 Plus is well worth considering.

It costs R5 999 and thoroughly impressed us when we reviewed it earlier in the year.

Some of the standout features include its design, crisp 6″ display, solid battery, and good all-round dual camera, all for less than R6k.

You can purchase the Nokia 7 Plus at Hi-Online here.

Sony Xperia XA2 Ultra

Sticking with the big screen trend, let’s turn to something from Japan – the Sony Xperia XA2 Ultra.

Like the Nokia 7 Plus, this smartphone costs R5 999 and sports a sizeable 6″ FullHD screen. The large screen real estate should be great for watching videos and movies, but the real talking about this device is the camera setup.

It’s got a 23MP lens on the rear, but up front is where the action is, with a self-focused 12MP plus 8MP orientation.

LG Q7

Time for another R6k smartphone. Noticing a trend here?

The LG Q7 is an underrated smartphone from a South Korean manufacturer whose local profile has dipped slightly of late.

When we reviewed the LG Q7 during the middle of the year, its design in particular stood out, as did the UI that LG opted for on this device. It also boasts the usual plethora of specifications expected from a solid mid-range device, and should appeal to those who want something a tad different.

You can purchase the LG Q7 for R4 699 from Loot.co.za here.

Huawei P20 Lite

Next up is the Huawei P20 Lite, and the Chinese manufacturer has garnered a good reputation for releasing Lite versions of its flagship phones that offer great value for money.

This one is no different and even features a screen notch if you’re into that sort of thing.

There’s no Leica-certified lens setup here, but the 16MP camera on the front and back should prove more than capable. As should the Kirin 659 chipset and 4GB of RAM.

All this costs around R6 000, with contract options available at all the major local carriers as well.

You can purchase the Huawei P20 Lite from Telkom here, starting on a 24 month contract for R249 per month.

Samsung Galaxy A6+

Another Samsung device makes the cut here, and yes it costs R6 000.

It’s the Samsung Galaxy A6+ and it serves as a nice alternative for consumers who want a Samsung device but cannot afford the price tag of the A7, or indeed one of the far more expensive S smartphones.

It might not have a trio of cameras on the back, but the A6+ does have a 16MP and 5MP camera setup. Added to this is a large 6″ display and a big 3 500mAh battery to keep things ticking over.
