Looking at the provincial statistics for the 2018 matric exams

Now that the 2018 matric exam results have been released, it’s time to take a deeper look at some of the results. More specifically to see how each province has done compared to one other, as well as compared to how they performed in 2017.

Gauteng moved to the top spot compared to 2017, achieving a total pass rate of 87.9 percent, which is up 2.8 percent from last year.

“The class of 2018 has demonstrated our commitment to ensure that we are not only the best but we must count on those who make these results possible. These results represent what we have been aiming for, for so many years, not only to be number one but to produce quality results that will make everyone proud, most importantly our township schools,” said Gauteng Education MEC, Panyaza Lesufi, at the announcement of the results last week.

Free State took the second place this year with 87.5 percent, increasing by 1.4 percent. The Western Cape took third place with 81.5 percent and went down by 1.3 percent compared to its results in 2017.

“The reason why the Western Cape sort of dropped is because we don’t have a very high number of learners who do, what is called, the multiple examination opportunities,” explained DA shadow minister of education, Nomusa Marchesi, in the Western Cape.

North West came in fourth place with 81.1 percent and went up with 1.7 percent from 2017. Mpumalanga followed with 79 percent and went up by 4.2 percent from the previous year.

Despite KwaZulu-Natal having nine schools that received a zero percent pass rate, it managed to achieve the sixth spot with 76.2 percent increasing by a margin of  3.3 percent when compared to last year.

“We are happy to announce that for the third time in a row we have successfully increased the provincial pass rate. Our overall pass percentage for 2018 stands at 76.2 percent which is a 3.3 percentage point increase from the results of 2017,” noted  provincial education MEC, Mthandeni Dlungwana, at the release of the 2018 matric results at the Durban International Convention Centre.

Northern Cape took the third last spot with 73.3 percent and was down by 2.3 percent from 2017. The Eastern Cape followed with 70.6 percent and the province’s results went up by 5.6 percent from 2017, showing more improvement than any of the other provinces.

Completing the list is Limpopo with 69.4 percent, but despite its last place saw an increase from 2017 of 3.8 percent.

On the whole there was an upward trend among most provinces which is promising to see and bodes well for 2019’s end of year examinations.

Still there are some areas for concern, such as the dip in exam passes for Mathematics and Physical Science, as well as the fact that space in tertiary institutions still remains an issue even though more students than ever are getting a bachelor’s degree pass.
