The Asus ROG Mothership is an interesting take on gaming notebooks

Asus has used CES 2019 to showcase a new form factor for gaming notebooks with its ROG Mothership offering, or Zephyrus S GX701 if you want to use its official name.

Okay, so the form factor isn’t exactly new for computing hardware, and rather looks a bit like the Surface Pro convertible notebooks of a couple of years ago, as several consumer tech websites have pointed out.

Nevertheless this is indeed a departure from the usual design that accompanies most gaming notebooks these days.

Whether it sticks remains to be seen, but we’re certainly intrigued by the Asus ROG Mothership.

The new Asus device features a 17.3″ display up front, with all its components housed within an AIO-esque design. The aforementioned screen supports 144Hz and yields 1080p visuals, which is standard fare for most high-end gaming notebooks these days.

There’s also a kickstand on the rear that deploys when you want to prop up the ROG Mothership, with Asus adding that it can be placed in a number of different angles, which should hopefully ensure this notebook can keep pace with the viewing angles offered up conventionally designed devices.

So where is the keyboard to go alongside the ROG Mothership you’re asking? Well Asus has designed one that can be magnetically attached to the Mothership, or work wirelessly via Bluetooth. The keyboard also folds vertically in half while in this mode to take up less real estate on your desk.

Shifting back to the main body, the ROG Mothership is kitted out in a bevy of ports to take care of your connection needs, but delving deeper it Nvidia’s recently revealed mobile-specific RTX 2080 graphics cards feature. This is pared with an 8th Gen Intel Core i9 (8950HK), up to 64GB DDR4 RAM and a RAID 0 orientation with a trio of NVMe SSD (512GB).

All of this, plus an aluminium body means the ROG Mothership is on the heavy side and weighs roughly 4.69kg, which means it won’t be the most portable gaming notebook around.

As with many of the devices showcased  at CES 2019 this week, there is no word on when or if the ROG Mothership will be coming to South Africa. For now though it’s slated for launch sometime in Q1 2019 overseas, but no confirmation of price by Asus.
