IEB’s 2018 matric students claimed a pass rate of 98.92 percent

The Independent Examinations Board (IEB) announced that the 2018 matric exam students achieved a 98.92 percent pass rate, which was revealed following the release of the results by the Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, last week.

“2018 pass rate is an increase comparable to the previous year’s pass rate of 98.76 percent,” said the IEB in a statement following the release of the results.

This year 90.65 percent of pupils achieved a Bachelor’s Degree pass entry compared to the 88.50 percent of the previous year.

While 7.33 percent of pupils qualified for an entry to Diploma study compared to the 8.95 percent of the previous year, and 0.95 percent achieved for entry to a Higher Certificate compared to the 1.30 percent of 2017.

“There is a clear realisation among IEB learners, their parents and teachers that having the knowledge and understanding that lies behind the results on the certificate is far more important and meaningful for success after one’s schooling,” notes the IEB.

They attribute the increase in Bachelor’s Degree pass entries to the removal of the designated subject list. The designated subject list was removed at the beginning of  2018, where it previously stated that students were required to achieve a minimum of 50 percent on four designated subjects in addition to the normal pass requirements.

Now students can get 50 percent on any four subjects excluding Life Orientation, as well as the normal pass requirements to be eligible for a Bachelor’s Degree pass.

While the improvements are encouraging to see, it still begs the question as to whether tertiary institutions will be able to place a decent portion of the university eligible students, as that still remains a significant concern for many.
