Where you can use the Virgin Money Spot app in South Africa

Cashless payment apps have been growing in popularity for some time now and Virgin Money has announced that South Africans will be able to use its Spot app at more retailers.

Much like other digital peer-to-peer payment apps, users simply scan a merchant’s QR code (at checkout or on the bill) to make a payment.

South African Virgin Money Spot users can now make payments at the following retailers:

  • Burger King
  • Cellucity
  • Hi-Fi Corporation
  • Hungry Lion
  • Incredible Connection
  • Outdoor Warehouse
  • Primi
  • Sportsman’s Warehouse
  • Vida e Cafe

There’s also a nice bonus for users at time of writing. If you make a payment at Hungry Lion and Primi using the Virgin Money Spot app you’ll get five percent cash back straight into your wallet.

Users can now also purchase airtime and data bundles using funds in their Spot wallet or the bank card linked to the app.

Local Virgin Money chief executive officer, Andre Hugo, says that new functionality will be added to Spot soon including the ability to make municipal bill payments.

“We’re building out the national network of merchants who accept payment via Spot rapidly in the coming months. Additional value-added products such as municipal bill payments will also be added to Spot soon,” Hugo said in a statement.

Virgin Money reports that its payment app is growing steadily. In the last 31 days user growth climbed by a little over two percent and transactions increased by 11.197 percent.

You can find out more about Spot (which is available for Android and iOS) over on the official website.
