We are firmly in the camp which believes that there is no need for smart appliances, or at least we were until we saw this special little oven.
At CES 2019 this week, Whirlpool Corporation’s WLabs showed off the Smart Countertop Oven. Terrible naming aside, the product is rather cool.
The oven is capable of cooking food 11 different ways. According to Cnet these are: bake, broil, convection bake, convection roast, toast, reheat, proof, dehydrate, air fry, slow cook and warm.
Then, using a set of algorithms the oven will scan the food you put into it and cook it accordingly using the aforementioned methods.
Inside the oven, Cnet reports that it is large enough to cook a whole chicken or a 12inch pizza. A touchscreen allows you to manually control the Smart Countertop Oven and there is a wooden cutting board on top of the machine.
As this oven is “smart” it features mobile notifications, and it can be voice activated using Google Assistant and Amazon’s Alexa.
Whether or not the Smart Countertop Oven will come to South Africa at some point is unclear at this stage but we want one. Not so much for the smart capabilities but rather the various cooking methods the oven boasts.
Whether you want the smart capabilities or not, the oven will cost you $799 (~R11 170) State-side and it will be available in Q2 of 2019.
