863 schools in Gauteng still have space left for late applications

Earlier this week when addressing the media, Gauteng Education MEC, Panyaza Lesufi, confirmed that there are only 863 schools left in Gauteng with space for late applications.

Also adding that a total number of 205 schools have reached capacity for the 2019 academic year.

During the open application period, the department confirmed that it received 282 823 early applications for the year 2019, with 94.8 percent of those pupils placed in schools, and a further 24 228 applications were received late during December.

“We have successfully placed 8 090 pupils who have submitted documents, while 16 138 are provisionally placed and will be finalised when documents are submitted,” said Lesufi.

The MEC warned parents not to go to schools to try to place their children, and recommended that they  should rather visit district offices where there are walk-in centres. The centres started working on the 7th January and will be closed on 31st January.

“Parents are urged to submit the required documents to finalise placements, furthermore, they are advised to submit the required documents immediately after placements,” added the MEC.

“Unplanned financial implications of admitting late applications are substantial. Additional funding will have to be found to finance educator salaries, additional classrooms, learning and teaching support materials and school furniture,” concluded Lesufi.
