AMD reveals the 7nm Radeon VII GPU

Earlier this week at CES 2019, Nvidia took to the stage to announce new RTX GPUs for notebooks among other things. Now it’s AMD’s turn and the firm revealed an all-new GPU.

Christened the Radeon VII, the GPU is a substantial upgrade on the Vega 64 and features the new Vega 20 chip which measures in at just 7nm.

Because of this smaller die AMD has been able to boost the clock rate to 1 800MHz, that’s up from 1 564MHz in the Vega 64. The memory in the GPU is 16GB of High Bandwidth Memory 2 (HBM2) clocked at 2GB/s and a total memory bandwidth of 1TB/s.

During AMD’s presentation at CES 2019, it showed off a few benchmarks comparing the Radeon VII to Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 2080 and things are, okay.

The Radeon VII beats out Team Green in Battlefield V, Far Cry 5 and Strange Brigade. All benchmarks were run at 4K using the highest settings possible.

As you can see, the Radeon VII only beats Nvidia by 1 frame a second in Battlefield V and Far Cry 5. AMD also showed off Devil May Cry 5 running at 100fps on the highest settings at 4K.

The trouble with all of this is that AMD has priced the Radeon VII at $699 which is, according to The Verge, the same price as an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080.

The GPU will be available in February in the US but there’s no word just yet on when it will be available locally. You can watch AMD’s full stream from CES 2019 below.
