Motshekga says school infrastructure is Basic Education’s 2019 priority

Earlier this week the Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, was in KwaZulu-Natal at Wembezi Secondary School in Estcourt for her provincial school visit.

During her visit, the Minister noted what her government department aimed to focus on during the 2019 academic year, highlighting the fact that improving infrastructure in high schools across the country is a priority.

“The biggest issues the provinces have to focus on, is just getting basic infrastructure,” added Motshekga on an interview with SABC News.

The focus will also be, but to a lesser degree, on the foundation phase which is from Grade R to Grade 3, as well as the intermediate phase which is from Grade 4 to Grade 6.

On her visit to several other schools in the province, the minister noted that it is embarrassing to get into some schools and then expect professionals to work effectively.

“One of the schools I visited in the province, the principal’s chair was wobbly, you can imagine what the kids chairs are,” she noted.

She continued that the focus will be on early childhood development and making sure that areas which are hard to teach and don’t have good teachers, they can complement what is happening in class through information and communications technology.
