40 bursaries worth R150k each awarded to built industry students

The Department of Public Works (DPW) is trying to do their part in developing much-needed skills in the country with its young professionals programme.

The DPW Minister, Thulas Nxesi, has awarded 40 bursaries to matriculants who passed in 2018, and are now  studying towards careers the built industry at different tertiary institutions around the country.

The students are pursuing careers in built or property studies and specialising in fields such as engineering, hydrology, analytical chemistry, construction management, quantity surveying, architecture, landscape architecture, urban and regional planning, interior design, horticulture, actuarial science and property studies.

“The core function of the schools programme is to develop and nurture scarce skills as part of the DPW’s ongoing transformation process of the built industry. The bursary programme was introduced in 2014 and aims to harness scarce skills in the built industry,” said the DPW.

This year the bursary has increased from R130 000 to R150 000 per learner, per academic year. It will cover tuition, meals, accommodation, textbooks, academic resources and a monthly allowance. This programme has seen 145 recipients who have completed their studies and 57 of the students and are currently working for the DPW as interns.

The programme also recognised registered artisans and professionals who participated in the artisan development and young professionals programme. There are 110 young artisans who have obtained professional registration since the introduction of the young professionals programme in 2007.

“The department’s investment in these young people translates to over R6 million a year and serves as testimony of the department’s commitment to empowering young people,” concluded the DPW.
