Bungie parts ways with Activision but will still publish Destiny

The beginning of the year has been a busy one for Bungie and we’re not even two weeks into 2019.

After switching tack on a puzzle tied to endgame content, yesterday the developer announced that it would be parting ways with its publisher Activision. In addition to its newfound independence, Bungie will also retain the full publishing rights for Destiny.

“We have enjoyed a successful eight-year run and would like to thank Activision for their partnership on Destiny. Looking ahead, we’re excited to announce plans for Activision to transfer publishing rights for Destiny to Bungie. With our remarkable Destiny community, we are ready to publish on our own, while Activision will increase their focus on owned IP projects,” Bungie said in a statement.

Bungie went on to say that it will continue to deliver on the existing Destiny roadmap and added that it is looking forward to releasing new seasonal experiences in the coming months.

The developer also acknowledged that self-publishing Destiny won’t be easy but it’s ready to learn as it grows.

Destiny 2 will continue to receive support from BattleNet on PC according to a tweet from Blizzard.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer also tweeted his support of Bungie’s independence.

We are excited to see where Bungie takes its franchise now that it has full control over Destiny.

Will we see Tess and the Eververse store disappear unexpectedly? Probably not but, Bungie has teased that it will be surprising the community with announcements about the future of Destiny soon. We’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for that.
